This listing is for a complete set of Hartlands' General Custer & Head Down Palomino Prancer.
It is a very good set for Beginning Collectors, or for those who want to add good original pieces and/or modern reproductions to an existing incomplete set.
General Custer
is in excellent original 1950s condition with no scuffs or loss of paint!  Very often you find a nose scuffed off etc., but he is perfect.
His Horse
is the Palomino Color and is known as a 'Head Down Prancer'. According to my reference,
"Hartland Horsemen" by Gail Fitch, page 23, "This horse was sold without a rider in 1963-1964 and
may have also been Custer's last horse.  Custer was discontinued about 1960 (definitely before 1961);
the Prancer horse mold began about 1961--perhaps in 1960".
This horse came with an un-painted, molded on bridle and black separate reins.  When I purchased this horse he did not have the black reins.  I used a silvertone chain as reins, not original.
(Custer's other horse was a Palomino Walking horse with roached mane & wavy tail, with a painted on black bridle and separate black reins. NOT INCLUDED HERE).
The
Saddle
is original, with the Hartland stamp underneath.  It has some odd colorations, as if someone tried to paint it twice. The paint color is correct, but I don't know if the paint is original and the Hartland painter tried to paint it twice, if it is just discolored, or if someone else attempted to paint over the original paint.

The
Flag
is original and looks worn torn, which I love!  It is near impossible to find.  I have seen 1 and it alone was purchased for .00  See pictures.
The
Hat and Sword
are modern reproductions.  The
Pistol
came with my original purchase.
In Gail Fitchs' book, pg. 96 she describes Custers original Pistol as being a "Powder Pistol".
I think that this one is just a regular 800 Series Pistol and probably a repro.

and don't pretend to be.  I
get a lot of info from Gail Fitch's reference book, "Hartland Horseman" and from other collectors who call me out when I list something incorrectly, as they should.  My intentions are to provide full sets, even with repros, which I disclose when I use them, in order to give a beginning collector, or someone who loves the sets but doesn't have the money for all original items,(Like I did) a chance to purchase something they may want.  You can always keep your eyes out for the original items, like saddles, and change things out as you continue collecting.  Some original items are very hard to come by and make take a while to find...but that's the fun and that's how I started.
